It will help secure the borders by providing better strategic ability to our armed forces, also peace and prosperity in country mandatorily demands safe borders.

Modi Government in its second term, when already being praised for tough decisions on the issues of national security & integrity, is now one step ahead for border security. Rajnath Singh seems to be loaded with all unprecedented stuffs in his arsenal to make the plan successful. Wednesday, 18th September 2019, the day was a bit different than other normal days in the ministry of defence office at South Block, New Delhi. In a very unusual case the defence minister held a meeting with eminent personalities of institutions dealing with history & archives.

Representatives from the Indian Council of Historical Research, the Nehru Memorial Museum Library, the Directorate General of Archives, the ministry of home affairs and the ministry of defence met Rajnath Singh. These officials got approved a first-of-its-kind project under which the history of our country’s borders will be written. The work will cover various aspects of borders including tracing its formation, changes and shifting of borders with time and circumstances.

Objective

The project will also deal with the study and research about past and present role of our security forces as well as possibilities in future. Role of borderland people encompassing their ethnicity, culture and socio-economic aspects of their lives will also be written with the possibilities of its further enhancement with time and changing geopolitical situations.

When the people of a region clearly know the history of their culture, their people and their land, it helps them to construct their identity as well as it builds a sense of pride among themselves. It gives birth to a strong feeling of love for their nation and their people. The feeling which makes them far more powerful by uniting them and by reminding them of their responsibilities as a citizen based in that particular region. This feeling motivates them to follow the footsteps of their own ancestors who stood for the pride and honour of motherland even at cost of their lives.

Seema Jagran Manch (one and only NGO in India working at grass root level for border security through citizen awareness throughout the border areas of nation; affiliated to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) was demanding a thorough study of borders from last three decades for it provides a better understanding of border to the public in general and to the government as well as Army in particular.

Seema Jagran Manch has also been demanding a University focusing border study, historical and sociological importance of border areas, geographical conditions of borders, critical geopolitics, markets and regional development, as well as the quotidian life and identities in borderlands. Bharat has 15,106.7 kilometers of land border and a coastline of 7,516.6 kilometers including our island territories which provide enough important factors to emphasize the significance of researching these sensitive regions with enormous diversity.

Necessity

Many border areas of our country are currently affected by poor educational-medical facilities. Due to lack of transportation services it becomes hard for the authorities to make government schemes beneficial for border areas at grass-root level. Though the new government is working sincerely to connect these areas from the mainland, still a large section of border area, mostly on the Indo-Tibetan borders from Laddakh to Arunachal lack basic fast transportation facilities like roads & airports.

Many areas-villages in this Himalayan region are one of the best landscapes in the world for nature lovers but still only reachable on foot. This is leading to extensive migration of natives towards hinterland. Lack of ‘aware population’ in these sensitive regions will make our borders vulnerable and illegal cross-border activities are easier to perform. Illegal migration, which is already affecting Bharat adversely due to Bangladeshi and Rohingya intruders, will increase in case of empty borders.

‘Surakshit Seema – Samarth Bharat’

It is said in Mahabharata by Pitamah Bhishma that “Boundaries of a nation are like mother’s attire and its protection is the first and foremost duty of her children”. The project will provide better understanding and facilitate the government to plan development schemes specially for these minute areas. This mega project will also fulfill the objective of making common citizens living in hinterland areas aware about the history, culture and ethnography of areas far off on land borders and coastlines which will directly boost tourism and will indirectly enhance development and employment. It will help secure the borders by providing better strategic ability to our armed forces, also peace and prosperity in country mandatorily demands safe borders.
